Safeguarding

Supporting young people safely and responsibly is central to my work.

My approach to safeguarding

I work with young people and families in a way that prioritises safety, dignity, and respect at all times. Coaching is offered as a supportive, non-clinical service, and safeguarding is handled thoughtfully and transparently.

Parents and guardians are recognised as essential partners, and involvement is handled in ways that support the young person while respecting their need for a space that feels safe.

What coaching is — and is not

Coaching offers a structured, supportive space to explore experiences such as international moves, school changes, identity questions, emotions, and relationships.

Coaching is not therapy, counselling, or mental health treatment.
It is not a crisis or emergency service, and it does not replace appropriate medical or psychological care when that is needed.

Confidentiality and safety

What a young person shares in coaching is treated with care and respect, and confidentiality is the default.

There are clear limits to confidentiality. Information may need to be shared if there is a serious concern about:

  • the safety or wellbeing of the young person, or

  • the safety of someone else, or

  • abuse, neglect, or significant risk of harm.

Whenever possible, I aim to speak with the young person first before involving parents or other professionals.

Working with parents and guardians

Parents and guardians are involved in ways that support the coaching process without placing young people under pressure.

This typically includes:

  • agreeing on boundaries and expectations at the start,

  • sharing general updates or themes rather than session details,

  • open communication if concerns arise.

Contact between sessions

Coaching sessions take place in scheduled sessions only.

I do not provide crisis or emergency support between sessions.

If urgent concerns arise, families are encouraged to contact appropriate local services such as a GP/huisarts, school wellbeing team, or emergency services.

Commitment to safe practice

I am committed to:

  • maintaining clear professional boundaries,

  • working in line with safeguarding responsibilities,

  • handling concerns calmly and transparently,

  • referring to appropriate support services when needed,

  • ongoing development of safeguarding competence through training and supervision.

Safeguarding is a shared responsibility, and it is treated as a foundational part of ethical, meaningful coaching.

Professional standards

My coaching practice follows the EMCC framework and the Global Code of Ethics for coaches, mentors and supervisors, which sets out standards for professional conduct, confidentiality, and accountability.
